Problems of the Korean Information on the Complex Regional Pain Syndrome in the Internet

|
Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a clinically challenging entity, especially in terms of accurate diagnosis. Some Korean mass media broadcasted the sufferings from a CRPS. In 2005, a person with CRPS won a suit in reparation for the damage. Patients with severe pain may be interested in this disease. As the availability of health information through the Internet is rapidly increasing, we investigated the Korean Internet information on the CRPS. An Internet searching was conducted by 6 searching engines (Yahoo, Empas, Nate, Naver, Google, and Daum) on December, 2005. A total of 10 web-sites and documents were selected and included in the study. These were http://www.crps.co.kr/, http://user.chollian.net/~pain7575/neck_8.htm, http://www. samna.co.kr/mdk/aasd044.htm, http://www.alovenest.com/madang/2003_4/2003_4_05.htm, http://www.alovenest. com/madang/2003_4/2003_4_13.htm,http://h21.hani.co.kr/section-021013000/2005/10/0210130002005 10270582007.html,http://www.ohmynews.com/ArticleView/article_view.asp?menu=c10100&no=177384 &rel_no=1&back_url,http://www.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200407/200407110072.html, http://www.pain75.com/notice/view.php?page=1&number=8,http://www.kmib.co.kr/html/kmview/2002/1023/ 091877099114130000.html, and http://economy.hankooki.com/lpage/news/200511/e2005111316580170300.htm. The informers were reporters, citizen, or a patient with CRPS. Only one in 10 web information was provided by a medical doctor. For the reporters, CRPS is so severe and dramatic to report. The information was usually fragmentary or hard to understand. The severity of the pain and incurability were over-emphasized. It may provoke imaginary symptoms of CRPS, false self-diagnosis, and early give-up. Medical professionals should try to correct the falsified information.
